Liam's Story
I'd like to introduce you to Liam. Liam is an eight year old boy diagnosed with a severe form of epilepsy and several other conditions that affect his cognitive, motor, and social skills. Liam has no speech and is limited when communicating his wants or needs. The inset picture is of the BIKE party Liam had for his eighth birthday. I was moved to tears when his teacher organized a party with his classmates themed around his favorite activity. It was extremely emotional to see Liam interacting and enjoying the friends he is unable to tell me about.
To say Liam loves to bike would be a gross understatement. However, the only access Liam has to the type of bike he needs is at school. I've attempted to acquire an adaptive bike through waivers and grants with no success. ARK's lending library will allow Liam access to several tools providing not only developmental opportunities but social opportunities as well. ARK offers wonderful events for Liam to socialize with his peers in safe, supervised settings; I am so excited for the Role and Sole-a-thon and grateful for their efforts creating a lending library so we will have further opportunities to interact with friends and family.
